About TypingRat

What TypingRat is

TypingRat is a typing practice site. It measures how fast and how accurately you type, shows you where your weaknesses are, and gives you targeted drills to work on them.

What it measures

Every test reports speed, accuracy and consistency, and every figure is calculated on our servers from the keystrokes you actually produced - not from a number your browser reports. The formulas are documented publicly, because a typing score is only useful if you know what it means.

Speed is reported two ways. Raw WPM is how fast you typed. Net WPM subtracts a penalty for mistakes you left uncorrected, which is the figure most people mean by "typing speed".

What you can practise

Common words, sentences and paragraphs for general speed. Numbers and numeric keypad drills for data entry. Punctuation for the symbols that cost most people accuracy. Code in eight languages. And keyboard shortcuts for Windows, Visual Studio, VS Code, Excel, Word and web browsers.

Leaderboards

Results are ranked only if they pass validation. We check submissions for signs of manipulation and exclude anything that fails. We are not going to claim a browser-based test is impossible to cheat - it is not - but a result on our leaderboard has at least been checked.

You can opt out of public leaderboards entirely at any time.
