How to Type Faster

A practical guide to improving typing speed without sacrificing accuracy.

Accuracy comes first

The fastest route to a higher WPM is usually to slow down. Every mistake you make costs at least three keystrokes to repair, so a typist at 60 WPM with 99% accuracy will usually finish real work sooner than one at 75 WPM with 90%.

Practise at the speed where you can hold accuracy above 97%. Speed follows.

Stop looking at the keyboard

Every glance breaks your rhythm and costs far more than the keystroke you were unsure about. If you do not know a key by feel, that is the thing to practise - not the words you already type cleanly.

Practise what you are bad at

Most people practise what feels good, which means practising what they can already do. Your results page shows which keys and which character pairs slow you down. Those are what deserve your time.

Short sessions, often

Fifteen focused minutes a day will beat two hours once a week. Motor skills consolidate between sessions, not during them.

Watch consistency, not just speed

If your consistency score is low, your technique has gaps that a single fast test is hiding. Working on evenness tends to raise your ceiling more than chasing a personal best does.

Learn the shortcuts too

Typing speed is only part of how fast you actually work. Learning the keyboard shortcuts for the applications you use every day often saves more time than a ten WPM improvement, and it takes an afternoon rather than months.
